I have been writing letters to numerous governmental officials pertaining to my situation in becoming a Naval Aviator since January 2001. At the time I was 29 years of age. The response from these officials has been in a negative manner. The Navy is unwilling to grant me an age waiver.
I have been around aviation since I was 10 years old. My father owned a Cessna 182 Skylane and Beechcraft TravelAir. I have a current instrument rated private pilot's license with 150 hours. I am still working out 4 days per week while running 10 miles per week.
Neither my family nor my friends have the background that is needed to overcome this obstable. My question to you is can you recommend someone to talk with that might lead me in the right direction? Maybe someone in the Pentagon. .

This letter is in reference to application for pilot with the United States Navy. My name is Stephen P. Merrell. I am a 31 year old dentist practicing in Melbourne, Florida. In 1999, I was accepted into United States Navy to become a Naval Aviator. Prior to reporting to Officer Candidate School in October 1999, I was preparing myself physically and mentally for OCS. I developed some knee soreness from the running and was prescribed an anti-inflammatory medication. I provided the Navy with the medical information and the Navy still went ahead with the enlistment process. Everyone in OCS has to go thru one last physical in the beginning stage of OCS. The flight surgeon at NAS Pensacola recommended a medical discharge due to the anti-inflammatory medication.

I was told about how you started your pilot days at Nashua Airport by the owner of Wings Pilot Shop. My flight instructor had told him that I was in AFROTC and hoping to fly F/A-22's someday and he told me your story. It was interesting to hear that you started off as a pilot from Nashua. | Comments: | I think it very difficult for the average person to understand the things a soldier must endure. Many of us live a life of relative leisure and affluence. This was made possible by the men and women who stood up for our rights and freedoms...fought...and died to preserve it.
I am not an American. I am a Canadian, but believe the soldiers of your nation to be bretheren to us, for America will go in and do the job when everyone else wants to whine and waffle on issues. America is not alone. Many of us have hearts that go out to your forces.
My father served through two wars. My mother as well. All of my family on both sides have served for more than three generations now. I served. Now my daughter does too.
I wrote a piece on this that has won several awards now. If you are interested I can give it to you. It is not pretty. It is the truth about the sacrifices our soldiers make. Our soldiers are greatly misjudged and badly underappreciated. |
